When pregnant Chantal Ortiz and her partner Rick Davis headed out to Winter Park Memorial Hospital early Wednesday morning to give birth to their child, they had no idea that they would be making an emergency pit stop in the Winter Park Costco parking lot, where Davis would end up delivering the couple’s third child.

But that’s exactly how Celeste Elaine Davis ended up coming into this world. Her father, Rick Davis, joined Scott McKenzie and the Morning MIX this morning to recount the emergency delivery the day before.

Scott McKenzie: Let’s get the first hand account from the father himself. Rick…take us through it.

Rick Davis: Well, it all started with her [Chantal] tossing and turning in the bed, and her breathing. I could tell there was something going on. So I started to wake up, it was 3 something in the morning, and I started getting up and getting warmed up and everything. She yelled from the back that her water just broke and I could hear that her breathing was getting a little bit heavier. So I’m running around, pulling the car seat out of the box, throwing it into the truck, trying to get everything to get out of the house. Finally, my buddy got over to watch our other two sons. We hop in the truck, and I’m just going as fast as I can to get there. We turned off Goldenrod onto University, and she said, “There’s something coming out. There’s something coming!” So I just pulled over in the first turn which was Costco. By the time I got out of the truck and ran around the truck to open the door I saw the tip of the baby’s head coming out. I had called 911 but I wasn’t even listening until I got the baby out. So we got the baby out and she was scared because it wasn’t crying or breathing. So I started rubbing her and cleared out her mouth and everything and she started crying. So I gave the baby to her and I got on the phone with 911 and told them where we were at and that was it. I just waited for the ambulance to get there and they took them and they were both healthy. No issues with either one of them. We’re just happy. It’s a blessing. Once the baby started crying I just took my shirt off and wrapped the baby up in my shirt and got her all warmed up against Chantal and we just sat there and waited.

Dana Taylor: It’s the most natural thing in the world, childbirth, but at the same time, did you feel confident that you knew what to do. Did images of films flash back to you? Push…push!

RD: I was happy the baby was healthy. I feel privileged to be able to have that chance.

SM: It’s an amazing story. You’ve probably heard about babies being delivered on the side of the road. We all hear those stories. But you never think it’s going to be you.

RD: Never. But I’m glad it was.

SM: I know that when our daughter was born, that I felt like I was watching myself in the situation from above. Like I was in the situation, but I was watching myself in the situation. Did you have that same feeling?

RD: At the time, to be honest with you, I was just in survivor mode. All I knew was I had to get this baby out and make sure everything was going smooth. It was definitely surreal. It’s amazing. I was smiling from ear to ear. I’m sure if you saw the news, you could tell I was happy.

SM: Maybe over time it’s gotten worse with my wife, but if I was in charge of the birth of our daughter, I don’t know if she would trust me to be the one in charge of that.

RD: I think Chantal was pretty surprised I wasn’t just running around in circles screaming. But everything went smooth. I’m proud of everything.

SM: When my wife was pregnant and we were driving to the hospital in the middle of the night I made sure to put towels down on the seat because that’s just the way I am. I thought, this is the best moment of my life, but I don’t want the best moment of my life to mess up my car.

RD: was all over my seats. I should have brought towels.

SM: No! You did the right thing. I was, again, over thinking the situation.

Congratulations to Chantal and Rick…and welcome baby Celeste!
