As we approach the 1-year mark since losing our dear friend Scott McKenzie, family and close friends gathered at Lake Eola to remember one of the most recognizable voices of Orlando. In his honor, Scott’s family donated a bench to the City of Orlando and its residents and Saturday it was dedicated and unveiled for the first time.
Shortly after his passing, Scott’s family contacted the Morning MIX and said they wanted to do something special in honor Scott that all of us in Orlando could see and appreciate. Well, when you think of one of the most popular and beautiful places in Orlando, of course Lake Eola immediately came to mind. Not only is it visited daily by hundreds of people taking a stroll or exercising, but it’s also home to some of the biggest events Orlando has. Scott was almost always involved involved in those events, whether he was emceeing it or he was a participant, so Lake Eola made so much sense.
Scott’s sibling have purchased a bench and donated it to the City of Orlando for all of its residents to stop by and take a break and have a seat with one of Orlando’s most beloved morning show hosts. The bench is located on Robinson at Hillman facing Lake Eola in a beautiful shady setting. There is a plaque dedicating the bench in Scott’s memory that reads, “In remembrance of Scott McKenzie, waking up Orlando on mix105.1 for 24 years.”
So, stop by and visit the bench and remember all the years of smiles and laughs that Scott put on your face. His legacy will always live on in this town, but now we all have a place we can visit to remind us of how lucky we were to have him in the City Beautiful. #OrlandoLovesScott
Just a reminder that the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society was a big part of Scott’s life and once again, we will all be walking in his honor at Lake Eola on October 6th for the Light the Night walk. You can join us by registering or donating in his memory here.
