Over the weekend, at the D23 Expo in Anaheim California, The Walt Disney Company announced plans for essentially, an onslaught of new attractions and accommodations coming to their theme parks across the globe.
Focusing on Walt Disney World here in Orlando, here is everything that Disney confirmed is coming to the parks by 2021, (Disney World’s 50th celebration.)
Tron Lightcycle Power Run Roller Coaster: Arguably the most exciting attraction announced at D23 Expo is a clone of an already successful attraction at Disneyland Shanghai Resort, The Tron Lightcycle Power Run Roller Coaster. The coaster takes guests from 0-60 in under 5 seconds on the back of a lightcycle from the movie, TRON. The coaster is set to occupy land next to Space Mountain, furthering the appeal of Tomorrowland.
Live Entertainment Theatre – Based on the iconic “Willis Theatre” in Kansas City, where Walt Disney lived after he left his hometown, the 1920s theatre will be located on Main Street, U.S.A. and house live performances.
Guardians of The Galaxy attraction – This new attraction will replace Ellen’s Energy Adventure, the 45 minute ride that is currently located near Mission: Space. Rumors point to a roller coaster, and permits have already been filed to begin site work. Ellen’s Energy Adventure will close mid-August to make way for this new attraction which is set for a 2021 opening date.
Ratatouille – This new attraction will be trackless and an exact clone of the ride already in operation at Disneyland Paris. The ride takes guests on a journey through the culinary inspired film. The ride is geared towards kids of all ages and will be located in the France Pavilion in the World Showcase with a 2021 opening date.
China Pavilion – This is a minor tweak to a film in the China pavilion which will feature brand-new technology in filming this new feature.
Mission: Space – With two missions, orange and green, both will receive updates allowing for a different experience each time your ride. This update will be complete this August.
New restaurant – This new sit-down dining restaurant will be across from Mission: Space and take guests on an “out of this world culinary experience.” The restaurant will receive an opening date soon.
Star Wars Land – The official title of this new land is, “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.” Guests will be able to meet many characters from the iconic franchise as well as a host of new attractions.
Toy Story Land – This new land featuring Space Ranger Spin and Slinky Dog Coaster is set to open Summer 2018. Construction progress is already noticable with slinky coaster rising above the park’s skyline.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway – This ride will replace the Great Movie Ride, which is seeing the sponsorship from TCM end this year. This ride will close in mid-August to make way for construction for the new Mickey and Minnie Ride. This ride will take the original Mickey Mouse shorts and allow guests to fully be immersed into the beginnings of the Walt Disney Company. Opening date will be set soon.
New Resort Hotels
Star Wars Hotel – This hotel is arguably the most anticipated announcement from D23. Guests will be able to stay in the world of Star Wars with each guest room fully immersing guests into the world of Star Wars. The opening date of this hotel will be announced at a later date.
Disney’s Riviera Resort – This new Epcot area resort will feature a rooftop restaurant with views of both Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Evening dining will feature spectacular views of the fireworks at each theme park. Opening date will be announced at a later date.
Disney’s Skyliner – This new transportation option will take guests from Epcot to several resort hotels including Art of Animation, Pop Century, Caribbean Beach and Riviera Resort and connect them to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This new gondola system will have an opening date soon.
