We spoke to Rachel Nelson from The Red Cross and she passed along this valuable information:
The Red Cross is working closely with all of our County Emergency Management partners across Central Florida as they work to close any remaining evacuation centers, many of which are public school facilities. Resources and supplies are mobilizing to the areas of greatest need based on statewide disaster assessment. These resources will support sheltering or other post-storm assistance programs in cooperation with government and community partners.
The best way to support the work of the Red Cross is through a financial donation. Help people affected by Hurricane Irma by visiting redcross.org, calling 1- 800-RED CROSS or texting the word IRMA to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
We are not equipped to accept the donation of goods or other items at this point, but will be working with a partner organization to facilitate that at the locations of the new shelter operations.
A person can also apply to volunteer their time at www.redcross.org/volunteer Please note there is an unprecedented response with back to back hurricanes and we are processing new volunteers as quickly as possible.
