Lego is quite possibly one of the most popular children’s toy companies with millions of sets sold each and every year.
Well, just in time for the holidays, a new set of minifigures will be released!
The women of NASA will debut November 1st, which will honor women who have made major impacts to the space exploration industry such as Nancy Grace Roman, who helped develop the Hubble Space Telescope, Margaret Hamilton, a computer scientist who developed the software for Apollo missions, Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly to outer space, and May Hemison, the first African-American woman to fly into space.
The new Lego features are the work of science author and Maia Weinstock who actually submitted the idea as part the Lego Ideas website that let fans submit ideas for Lego sets that are then voted on by the public. Other fan-created sets that have been produced include Doctor Who and Big Bang Theory.
“In all realms of science, engineering, and technology, pioneering women have historically been underappreciated for their often groundbreaking work,” Weinstock said in a press release, “We have also seen that when girls and women are given more encouragement in the STEM fields, they become more likely to pursue careers in these areas.”
