Kevin Hart is coming back to Orlando and will perform on New Years Eve, December 31, 2017 at the CFE Arena! He talked with The Morning MIX about the upcoming show, his crazy year so far and how he plans to make next year better!
Kevin Hart: I’ve decided to bring in 2018 with a bang, and that bang is happening in Orlando. It’s a dope thing, kicking off my “Irresponsible” tour and the bigger version of it starts actually on December 3oth, so it’s huge.
Jay Edwards: Now with New Year’s usually comes New Year’s resolutions. Do you have a New Year’s resolution which you will never forget and did you stick to it?
KH: Uh, no. I’ve broken them all. I tried to become a vegan one time. That lasted for a week. There was another time I said I was gonna stop drinking. That was about a good two and a half weeks. And then on one of them I said I was gonna actually try to grow. That’s when I was younger. I failed at that one too. So I just stopped. Each year I just try to do better than I did the year before. So those goals have actually came true. You know, just me trying to outdo what I did the year before. Other than that no, I’m not good at it at all.
Dana Taylor: It’s been a little bit of an interesting year for you. I don’t want to get too deep into that, because you’ve already spoken on that. When you look at 2018, what are some of your goals for your life?
KH: I don’t care if you did get into it. I’m pretty much an open book. I think that’s what makes me . . . me. That’s what my fans appreciate. I don’t try to hide behind a mistake or run from it. You can only have a story to tell if you got a great book. The problems I’ve had in my life, I think they’ve only made me better, smarter. And things that happened happened for a reason. For me, it’s realizing the punches I’ve taken from God have come across as warnings to say, “Hey man, you’ve worked to hard to lose everything you’ve got over being irresponsible, over being stupid, over not making good decisions and making good judgement.” With that said, I’m almost 40, I’m 38, so it’s time to start being grown and doing grown man stuff and making sure that you do it for the duration of your life. At this point I think it’s just about maturity. It’s about maturity and realizing everything around me there’s a massive trickle effect to anything that’s done. So now that you have that understanding, it’s just the straight and narrow. Which is good. You’ve got to be smart enough to find the positives and negatives and I’m very good at doing that.
DT: I remember meeting you and feeling like I met a real human being and I am absolutely rooting for you. I do believe just in meeting you that you’re a good man.
KH: I 100% am. What I love the most about moments like this is they really define who you are. Not from the public eye, it’s just you as a person, as an individual. It’s just like when a person goes to jail and gets out and then goes back to jail. You go, “What? How do you go back? You got the biggest warning ever…you just came from there!” You don’t understand how they do that. This is one of those things. You don’t go backward. There’s no reason to. I laugh when people say, “Kevin messed up again. The second time.” People don’t understand, my first marriage, I left. I’m the one that filed for divorce. There was no moment where I was caught in a scandal and then she left and I tried to fight for her back. That never happened. I left. I wasn’t happy. It wasn’t a situation that was good for me. So I moved on. This is a completely different situation. This is my lack of maturity and ignorance. This is just stupidity on my side. This is the one where I had to go and fix, and clean up, and really, really dig to make sure that I had my foundation and household intact. This is the time where I messed up. There was never another time. So this is the time where I go, “Okay Kevin. Be smarter, be better, and come out a better man, better husband, better father. It was that simple.
Adam Alexander: When you’re not working hard, where do you like to vacation?
KH: Wherever we can go that pretty much gives us the time to ourselves. We try to go away and go more low key now. Island life is always a dope experience. My kids love the snow so getting the skiing in at all the times of the year is always fun. And sometimes it’s just being home without people knowing that your home. It’s not always about a vacation, it’s just about shutting it down and being in the house. I love the fact that they’re getting older, my daughter’s 12, my son’s about to be 10, and I’ve got a little man on the way. That last name is expanding and that’s a beautiful thing. It’s just about me giving as much time and love and energy to that household as possible.
JE: You’re a busy man. You’ve got the book out, you’re getting ready to run the New York City Marathon, and you’ve got Jumanji getting ready to come out with Nick Jonas and The Rock in December. How was that?
KH: The movie’s big. It’s honestly the biggest movie that I’ve done. They threw all the bells and the whistles at this. My second movie working with Dwayne. The chemistry there is amazing. Nick Jonas, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, it’s an amazing cast. To reiterate the fact that this is not a remake. I don’t want people thinking that we went and remade Jumanji. This is a continuation of Jumanji for this generation. So, if the game was found again by someone else, this is the way that the game was opened up to the world that was presented. It’s a great movie man. The action and the adventure that these characters go on and the way it is introduced, it’s new. It’s refreshing. I’m glad I had the opportunity to do it. I think Sony did an amazing job of producing it. The people are going to be in for a treat.
As far as my book being out, the book was #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and is still doing amazing things. And that’s something else that had me pissed off. How do people say some things? I wrote a book. It says what I did in the book. Read the book people so you can understand much more about me. Everything is in there but the response from it has been through the roof and amazing. And to say that I have a book that was #1 on the New York Times bestseller list is an amazing accomplishment.
The support I get from my fan base is just unreal and that’s what inspires me and motivates me to work as hard as I do. For me it’s not a race. I plan to be around for a long time. So me running this marathon is an example of how I look at life. I want to get better and I want to get stronger as I go. November 5th is me running against myself. It’s my first marathon of hopefully many more. It’s something that I wanted to do to challenge myself and show people that whatever you put your mind to you can do. In no way shape or form am I a runner that’s been training his whole life. I didn’t do it in high school, I didn’t do it in the two weeks I went to community college. It’s something that I picked up on and just fell in love with as I got older. And it’s something that I think relaxes me and acts as my muse, for lack of a better word.
AA: Do you have a goal for your time Kevin?
KH: I’m trying to break three fifty. If I can get under three fifty I’m happy. But I also decided to run for a cause. I want to personally put up money to send 10 kids in Philadelphia where I’m from to college on me. And after doing that I said, you know I want to do it bigger, I want to do it better. So I started my own charity, Help from the Hart charity, and I’m raising money for the youth and education to send kids that want to go to college and may not have the means to go, I’m raising money to do that. So, right now, if people go to my IG page in my bio, you can actually click the link, and I think we’ve raised like $230,000 so far and the goal was $300,000, I’m quite sure we’ll probably surpass that. It’s all going to the youth, all going to giving this young generation educational opportunities that they may not be accessible to getting.
