Universal Orlando Resort is growing again.
The theme park has scooped up 101 acres of land just off Sand Lake Road, north of the 475 acres they purchased back in 2015 off of Universal Boulevard.
This now gives Universal 500+ acres to build hotels, theme parks, and entertainment facilities south of the current Universal Orlando Resort complex.
Universal is in a massive building phase with 3 new hotels being constructed, Aventura Hotel off Adventure Way adjacent to Universal’s Volcano Bay water theme park and 2 new hotels on the former Wet n’ Wild site. These 3 hotels will give Universal over 2,000 more hotel rooms upping their inventory and keeping guests on property, a tactic that has worked well for Walt Disney World.
Universal now owns 500+ acres off Universal Blvd and Sand Lake Road, making the possibilities abound for new tourist attractions.
The theme park recently filed plans to build over 2,000 structure parking garages off Destination Parkway for “overflow” parking.
A spokesman for Universal did not give any further information.
I for one feel they’re in the process of planning a whole new “resort” complete with hotels, parks, and a second City Walk for that vacant land.
With Walt Disney World preparing for their 50th anniversary, I feel Universal has something up their sleeve to compete with the new attractions coming down the road at Disney.
Connecting the current resort and the new vacant area is going to prove interesting as I4 separates the two areas. There have been rumors of monorails, buses and dedicated lanes for resort buses.
