With 2017 winding to a close, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the songs of 2017 and pick a “top” song.
This year we saw new music from so many artists including Taylor Swift, Eminem, Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, and so many more!
So here is my favorite 10 songs of the year.
10. Katy Perry – “Pendulum”
My absolutely favorite song off of Katy’s new album Witness is Pendulum. The song is perfect. It’s got true Katy feel but a new spin on a classic sound. This is the only song that was not a “radio single” and I truly feel it should have been.
9. Lorde – “Green Light”
The comeback of Lorde with her sophomore album, Melodrama was much welcomed by fans worldwide and “Green Light” was a bit of a shock to the typical dramatic Lorde tunes.
8. Harry Styles – “Sign Of The Times”
Harry’s debut solo single truly entered the world in true rockstar fashion. A song that was well over 5-minutes, was a testament to what fans could expect out of Mr Styles from his debut album. Looking forward to see what 2018 has in store for this British heartthrob.
7. Demi Lovato – “Sorry Not Sorry”
I’d argue this is Demi Lovato’s biggest song of her career, aside from “Skyscraper” which I love for personal reasons, this song is true Demi. It’s her being unapologetically herself and literally telling her haters that she’s not sorry for being her.
6. Zedd feat. Alessia Cara – “Stay”
I want to put this song so much higher on this list, but I have to stop myself for the obvious songs ahead. Alessia Cara in my opinion can do no wrong whatsoever. Pair her perfect vocals with Zedd’s EDM sound, and you have a song built for greatness.
5. Camila Cabello – “Havana”
Camila had to prove herself after she left a very successful group in Fifth Harmony and she didn’t disappoint. “Havana” captures everything great about Camila and the things that set her apart from her peers, her Latin heritage.
4. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber – “Despacito”
You can’t talk about music in 2017 without mentioning the juggernaut that was “Despacito.” The song was already destined to be a hit, and then you throw on Justin Bieber and the song catapulted itself to the top of the charts.
3. Taylor Swift – “Look What You Made Me Do”
Yes, the song everyone was waiting for, no one could ignore, and everyone had an opinion about. It was a song that either people loved the second the heard it or they hated it to its core. Either way, it was the beginning of her “reputation era” and it shattered YouTube records and was certified multi-platinum in a few short weeks. Typical Taylor.
2. Miley Cyrus – “Malibu”
She came in like a wrecking ball…except this time, Miley was more down to her roots and a lot more subtle. “Malibu” was a refreshing taste of the new chapter Miley was living herself and it truly showcased her 2 biggest talents, her song-writing and her vocal abilities. The song didn’t chart as high as others, but it definitely gained Miley many new fans who had sworn her off during her “Bangerz” era.
1. Logic feat. Alessia Cara & Khalid – “1-800-273-8255”
This song is number 1 for so many reasons. Again, this is my personal list, so I can do whatever I want, but I truly feel this was THE BEST song of the year. Not only is Logic an incredible artist, along with my favorite Alessia Cara and obviously the talent of Khalid, but the subject matter this song tackles is so deep. The title of this song is literally the suicide prevention hotline number, and the video for this song deals with a forbidden love between two lovers who fear of rejection of their families, like so many people in this world. This song will be synonymous with the tumultuous year that 2017 was and will go down in history as one of the best songs ever written.
