Luckily for me, my brother and sisters average a decade older than me. It gave them a chance to be in their teens just as my musical tastes were forming. My brother especially had an incredible record collection, so at a very early age I was glued to the radio and when I wasn’t, I was spinning discs at home. Also around then, my cousin
“
trust me, we're all a bunch of loons around here.
”
received a tape recorder which I “borrowed” hoping she wouldn’t want it back. By the time she did, I had grown very comfortable talking into the microphone and had already started tinkering with the machine to get special effects by changing the speeds, looping it around to get it to run backwards and other tricks.
By age 12 I had committed to figuring out how I could be on the radio. From this side of the speakers it just seemed like an amazing job. So I hand-wrote a letter to my favorite DJ in Columbus, Ohio thinking it would end up in a bag of fan mail and never be seen, just like I had never heard back from Stevie Wonder. But this time I did get a response, and it was full of answers to my questions about how to get started with my radio career.
Following his advice, I hosted morning radio shows all four years in college and then sent out tapes to see if I could actually do this for a living. The day I came home from graduation, my friend Dave told me about a job opening at a small station in a small town nearby. The next day I put on a suit and brought that tape over to the Program Director, Mr. Swinehart. The tape wasn’t that good, so the suit must have done the trick because he hired me that day and I went to work the next week.
After that it was down to Tallahassee for job two, back up to my hometown of Columbus for job 3, over to Boston for job 4, and then down here to Orlando for my dream job at one of the industry’s most respected stations, MIX105.1. 21 years later I’m still livin’ the dream, doing what I’ve always wanted to do.
It’s still an absolute thrill to be a part of starting so many people’s days, and I’m extremely thankful that you’ve allowed me, my wife Fran, and our daughter Lauren the opportunity to settle down in such an awesome city. This bio seems pretty normal, but trust me, we’re all a bunch of loons around here.
Thanks again for waking up with us each day. You’re awesome.

I am wondering if you would be willing to do something to help promote National Epilepsy Awareness Month which begins today and runs through the end of November. I was diagnosed after I had a grand mal at work in 2010. I am trying to contact local radio stations, news stations anywhere to help spread awareness..anything that you could do would be greatly appreciated! you may contact me via email, I would put my number up but I see that the comments are posted for everyone to see

Hi Scott,
I heard your ticked off this morning about being trapped. I know little things like that can be annoying. I remember things like that from my marriage. My wife died a few years ago, we were married 17 years. We had a wonderful relationship that seems similar to you and your wife. I am glad I had the time I did with her. I just wanted to say, don’t take your relationship for granted, you never know how long it will last.
Have a mix day!

Thank for the message Glenn. I’m very sorry that your time with your bride was cut short. I assure you, neither of us take the other for granted. These moments, like the “you forgot to take out the garbage” trap are some of our best moments. We have a lot of fun with each other, and our daughter has turned out the same way. We’re serious when we need to be, but the rest of the time we don’t let things get too heavy.
Thanks for listening and for the comment.

How or where can I find your version of Banging on the Drums that you play each Friday morning?
Scott McKenzie
July 4, 2011 8:28 pm
The original “Bang On The Drum” is by Todd Rundgren. It’s been over 20 years since I mixed in those animal noises and I’ve had a lot of requests to make it available for download. But since I don’t own the rights to the song, I can’t legally distribute it. All I can say is that it always plays after our Pyramid game on Fridays, so if you have a way to record it from the radio or our online stream, that would be a way to get it.

I have a question. Why is it that TPTB decide to erase the word sex from Bruno Mars new song, but don’t mind playing King of Leon’s “Your Sex is on Fire? Enquiring minds……
Scott McKenzie
June 23, 2011 8:59 pm
Guessing here, but I think it’s because The Lazy Song is so open musically and the vocals are so out front, the word just seems to, pardon the expression, pop out. The song can continue without that one word vs. Kings Of Leon where the title would have to be bleeped every time. Again, just a guess. Interesting question though.

Ricardo
June 13, 2011 9:04 am
Today I heard your “magazines” “pocket catastrophy” Well, I can say ( as an aircraft Tech) It is true, but since technology on mobile devices is more advance that the electrical wires on aircrafts, that is why is not allow to be ON during critical parts of flight. One phone won’t make interference, but many do. Even on airplane mode they do emit RF. And since navigation equipment is scattered over the top and bottom surface of aircraft skin, you never know what it can cause. Tell Dana. Put on airplane mode first, then off. Also, at altitude you will making the phone “search” for a signal that won’t reach from the surface. And that will cause crazy stuff to the phone. I can tell more, but it will be boring.
Have a wonderful day!!!!

Scott, I was listening to your conversation a couple days ago about Oreos and Hydrox cookies. I think Jay referred to Hydrox and “fake” Oreos. I just wanted to let you know that Hydrox came out in 1908 and Oreos came out in 1912, so actually Oreos are “fake” Hydrox. It just happened that the company that made Hydrox was bought out a couple of times and the cookies just weren’t as popular as Oreos. I actually preferred Hydrox over Oreos while they were still available. There was a slight difference in the cream filling.

Scott I was home on Monday and watching GMA and they had the man with the full face transplant and his doctor. So I was wondering the doctor that appeared on GMA was that your nephew?
Scott McKenzie
June 7, 2011 3:44 pm
I don’t think so. I would have gotten an alert from my sister (his mother.) There’s the doctor who headed the transplant team in Boston, and then there’s the patient’s personal plastic surgeon who is my nephew. He was there with the surgery team, but because it took place in a different hospital, he was more of a consultant during the surgery. Afterwards he flew back to Dallas with the patient and continues to be his doctor during the rest of the recovery.

Hey Scott, I was listening this morning to your dietary troubles. Here’s a suggestion that might feed your inner geek and heightened sense of competition. When you go out to lunch with someone have them order for you and you order for them. Scott: I am very disappointed for the bad choice of words you used this morning to describe my country Colombia and my people. It is so unfortunate that people like you who do not know anything about who we are and what we believe in, can use a public media to make such comments. Do you really believe that every person in Colombia (including millions of children) are drug dealers? I believe you owe us a public appology and perhaps one day you should read about our country and get to know more possitive facts: best coffee in the world, first exporter of flowers to the USA, best emeralds, and mostly 40 million people who are hard workers and try to do the best for they and their families.
I may consider switching to other radio station – sad because I’ve listened to your program since when I moved to Florida 11 years ago.

Alfredo,
You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!
I always do a little “self-inventory” after each of our talk breaks in the morning, and after that one I thought to myself, “I certainly could have set that segment up better.” For the most part I think I get it right, but that segment in particular had the finesse of a sledge hammer. In no way did I mean to paint all Columbian people with a “drug dealer brush,” but it sure came out that way, and I apologize for my poor choice of words and my inaccurate description not only of Columbian people, but of my feelings toward them.
Thank you for calling me out on this.

We have two types of vultures, turkey vultures have a red head and black vultures have a black head. Both are protected species. We have more vultures in Florida in the winter because some migrate from the north in winter, thus increasing the populations in Florida. Vultures roost in trees and on the ground. They nest on the ground, in palmetto thickets, old barns or buildings and hollow stumps. Vultures can cause damage to roofs, air conditioning and communication equipment. They pick and eat rubber insulation on wires.

I usually agree with most of the views of the cast but this time I have to disagree. The comment parents should remove all posters of Hanna Montana from their Child’s room is ridiculous. We as parents have to differentiate between Hanna Montana and Miley Cyrus. Hanna Montana is the Childhood star and Miley Cyrus is the adult. Young girls idolize Hanna Montana it is the teens that pay attention to Miley Cyrus. I don’t see a young girl walking into a store and buying this.so I think the Hanna Montana Posters are safe to stay up. Now the Miley Cyrus followers are teens and I asked my daughter who is in Middle school if they had been discussing it at school and she said she had not even heard the story and then asked her if Miley doing this would make other teens want to try to smoke. Her response to me was first the ones in her school that are going to smoke or anything else is not going to make that decision based on what Miley Cyrus is doing in her life. This is my feelings exactly. The ones walking into a shop asking for what Miley was doing are already doing things they shouldn’t.
I feel if radio and TV and programs like TMZ would stop talking about it and giving it airtime less children would know about it.
I as a parent feel every time you talk about it on the air your are exposing another person who might not have ever heard the story when it first came out. I listen to your station every morning while getting my children ready for school because I feel comfortable things are not said like other stations. But because of this topic being given so much airtime this morning my daughter now knows about it.
Like every teen star she will make her mistakes in her personal life its the press and radio that determine how much we know and how much our children are exposed to.
SCOTT YOU REALLY SURPRISED ME WITH YOUR VIEW ON THIS.
You know during the Clinton Era my child whom is now in college was exposed to terms he should have never heard BECAUSE OF RADIO AND TV…..DON”T GIVE NEGATIVE ISSUES AIRTIME……LETS TALK ABOUT THE GOOD THAT STARS ARE DOING TO SEE CHILDREN WHO ARE LESS FORTUNATE HAVE A CHRISTMAS……SOMETIMES ITS GOOD TO FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE AND LEAVE THE NEGATIVE ON THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR!!!

Scott, I was listening this morning when you were talking about Miley Cyrus. I had no idea this video even existed until your show this morning but my thirteen year old daughter is a BIG Miley fan (as a matter of fact we won tickets to her concert from MIX last year). I kind of agreed with the first caller this morning when she said basically “why bring it up and bring it to their attention because they probably don’t know about it..” but on the way to school this morning I casually asked my daughter “have you seen that video with Miley Cyrus in it?” I got a VERY quick NO. She didn’t ask WHAT video I was talking about. Because I was getting ready to drop her off at school I said, “ok well we can talk about it later.” Before getting out of the car she rolled her eyes at me and gave me “the look”. I am assuming by her reaction she knows exactly what video I am talking about and that scares me.. Like the mom that called in this morning I would have assumed my “innocent” 13 year old knew nothing about this video. Now I know better. I am going to be talking to her tonight about it and the posters are coming out of her room. She can pick another role model. Thanks for bringing it to our attention this morning!

Scott,
Kudos to you for your stand on Miley Cyrus’ video… a wise person said recently that as a parent you wouldn’t even contemplate leaving your child on railroad tracks in the path of an oncoming freight train without doing all you could to save them. Not sure why as parents we feel the greater need to have out kids think we’re “cool” than to try to protect them from the dangerous things out there in the world today. All of us have seen the effects of kids in the path of freight trains like alcohol and drug abuse. I agree that these issues need to be addressed with our children frequently. They may not think we are the coolest, and they may roll their eyes and say they know, but it’s our job as parents to be careful with our children and their welfare. If we don’t issue the warning, who will?

Scott and the whole crew,
I will start by saying that I have loved your station. I have listened to you since 2002 when I moved here. From then to now we all have changed, as time does that. I have changed significantly since returning from my year in Iraq in 2005. I only say that to help you understand where I am coming from with what I am about to talk about next.
Over the past few months I have stopped listening to your station for a few days, every time you play a certain song. It is the Green Day song ’21 guns’. That song REALLY riles me up! Most any Veteran’s when hearing anything with “21 guns” in it refers to the many 21 gun salutes given to our fellow brothers and sisters who have died, wether in combat or not. The lyrics to this song is what disturbs me. Any Veteran will tell you that they are there, and would NEVER “give up the fight”! Once the bullets start flying, our only thought is to protect the ones around us. NOT why we are there, politically. We are there for those next to us. That bond is really and very much the reason we fight. It infuriates me to think of anyone “laying down their arms and giving up the fight”. I do understand the whole being in ruins and faith walking on broken glass….but giving up?????
Anyway, I wanted to share my thoughts of this song. I was REALLY offended when I heard your station play it on Veteran’s Day. I have not been able to listen to your station since.
Thank you for your time,

Scott, I always wanted tell you this one: Many, many years ago pledged that one day I would get myself a big orange tomcat and his name would be( I swear this is true) GEORGE. After my last cat( a grey female) died, I went out to find me just such a kitten and searched for 4 month bc for some reason that year had a shortage of orange males. But I had made up my mind and finally I found him at a rescue shelter. His name was Sir Oliver but I renamed him and he didn’t mind. Of all the cats I have had, George has the most personality. He is beautiful, 15 lbs large and the coolest cat ever. And every time you talk about your George I think they must be brothers. But just know, I wished for and named my George way before either cat was even born. Pretty cool, though., don’t you think? Great minds think alike or so they say………

Hi Scott. Over time you have provided us with lots of great “Fran nailed it” recipes and so now I’m looking forward to her Chicken pot pie recipe. I would love to try it. Jay said he added sour cream. Are you ready to release this one to the world? Can’t wait to hear from you. Take care.

Why did you stop playing the Friday song? We’ve gone two weeks without it! Put it on iTunes if you aren’t going to play it, so I can at least have it for the 20+ people in my office that look forward to it every week. Please please please please!

My husband and I travel to Italy last summer for our 25th. Sitting outside eating lunch a wonderful man strolled by playing the accordian, when he finished his song I clapped. Wow did that guy move fast. I was in my face hands reached out for payment. My husband said that when I clapped that means he played for me and I most pay the man. I gave a few Euros and the manager yelled and the musican left. never forget the music or how fast he moved, we still laugh about it. My husband and I wake up to your show weekday, thanks for making us laugh. keep up the great job.

Hi Scott…Even though I’m back in New Jersey over 6 years now, I look forward to my vacations in Florida so I can hear the Morning Show! I know you’ve met thousands of fans over the years, but you always seemed to know me when I came to Mix events. To this day, when my daughter says “have a great day” or something to that sort, I’ll say “You Three!” Peace to you and your family, Lisa Wynberg Brown

Scott,
I have been a loyal listener for past 18 years and love your show. You, Jay and Dana just crack me up. Want to thank you for the best breakfast I have had in awhile, a “sticks and fruit” smoothie, MMMM, my favorite. Can’t wait to try the Pumpkin Pie Pop Tart too. Have a good day and keep up the great work.

Hi Scott!
LOVE, LOVE your morning show. You guys are crazy but not over the top. You keep it clean and fun.
Simulcast is awesome! My girlfriend and I saw them at the House of Blues about a year ago.
It sounds like you and your wife have done a great job raising your daughter. I wouldn’t change a thing just because she’s in college. You both have provided for her and still are. She is an adult young lady and understands that. I believe she will continue to respect the house rules because she respects you both.
I know this because I have a 22 year old that just graduated and lives at home and a 19 year old on her 2nd year and the rules still apply even though they were not stated, but they are understood. To me that speaks TONS for the child and the parents that raised them.
Dana you’re awesome too!!
Take care and God Bless!

I just bought some new pants at Kohl’s and Penneys and you’ll be happy to know they haven’t pulled that “hey I’m losing weight” trick with the waist band size difference. I wear 36 and that’s what they measured. It must be something they are going to do in the future. I think they are doing the same thing with slippers, because we got a pair of them that were supposed to be 7 or 8 and they were more like 10 or 12.

Hey there Scott, I took my daughter to the Florida Mall to see Nastia Liukin on Saturday. That was a blast. So glad to see Mix 105.1 there. I took a picture of my daughter in front of the Mix billboard and it actually looks like she was printed on it. I’d like to send it to you but not sure how to attach it. Anyway,
we love your station and listen in the morning on the way to school and work! You guys rock !! Take care. : )

Well Scott I love your show….but today you sounded very ignorant regarding the release and charges for medical records….you should check the law before talking about it……the charges are not going to the Dr. it goes to the pay the supplies, mail charges, copies and to pay the time of the employee who will make her/his best to have ready the copies for you….obviously you don’t know anything about medical overhead expenses….$20-$25 is the average for any office to charge for medical records and/or x-rays…
Scott McKenzie
August 19, 2010 10:08 am
Yep, I’ll cop to ignorance on this topic, that’s why I asked for callers to enlighten me. Having had my share of scans, I’m surprised that some places charge, and some don’t, even for discs. I understand how doctors are being squeezed and are doing their best to make a decent living, especially considering the debts incurred during schooling, and the expenses of equipment, staffing and insurance. I’m wondering if, once all medical records are digitized, if it’ll become easier and cheaper for both sides. Through my lymphoma treatments I was always encouraged to ask for copies of everything, but to my knowledge was never charged a fee.
Thanks for listening, and for keeping me on my toes!

My oldest, now 26 (Go Noles) was our Lauren…heading off to college and leaving us devestated and behind. Of course we were thrilled & so proud but it was hard to have her go. We know what you and Fran are feeling and I want to give you words of encouragement. I have always thought our families were much alike…we laugh at ourselves before others can, we actually have a fun time being together and my daughters (yes, I have 2…that later), are happy to vacation with us and have never rolled their eyes at something we said. Okay, that one is a lie, but we lived through it and now, they are beginning to realize that turning into us is not so bad. Yeah, they have both actually said that! Sweet! I also think that Fran is like me…handles the business end of things (although she asks your advice she probably thinks she’s more in control) and you just need to love Lauren and offer the advice to his girl. Let me tell you, from what I’ve heard, you are the soft parent and so much like my husband. On a night when I was annoyed with my daughter going out, my husband turned to me and said, “Honey, all we can do is say be careful and I love you. We’ve given her the tools to know right from wrong and I trust her.” Naturally, I was annoyed by his sensitivity but he was right. We raised them the best we could with the right morals and to make good decisions. They are wonderful and I know that Lauren is too.
Anyway Scott, let me tell you that while you both will feel Lauren’s departure greatly (I couldn’t even speak at work when someone asked me how the move in went!), you will constantly be amazed and proud of her step into adulthood. But you know what else? While Fran is going to be the one (forgive my presumptiousness) to make sure she is doing right from wrong and continue to make sure the business and education end is on track, Lauren will love and miss her mom…but she will miss you more. Nothing replaces daddy. You are the one to make sure she puts gas in her car, slips her a $10 here or there (my husband aslways left cash in funny places to surprise her, even if it was only $2.00…and she loved it everytime), and will listen to her exploits without judgement or criticism. We moms think we have to correct all the time if we doubt the safety or person. For some reasons, when dads do that, the daughter takes it differently. The moon will set on you and mom will become the one to give “solid” advice and mentor her while you will give her daddy advice that sounds more like it is coming from your heart than your head. Leaving home is the best thing to happen because Lauren (although she already knows she has great parents) will see you both in a different light and she will love you even more.
Every talk on the phone, every visit with her will make you shed a tear that she isn’t with you, but you will be so proud of the woman she is becoming that, as we parents do, we sacrifice everything for them…even if it is our heart. Hang in there Scott. This is a wonderful time.
Oh, my second daughter. She’s at Western Carolina and will graduate (hopefully, this spring). She took 4 years to get through Valencia but what a ride that was. Anyway, she’s my tough cookie and even though she didn’t like to wear her heart on her sleeve when she was younger, now at 23, she is more than happy to share her heart with us. And of course, daddy is the one she can’t wait to share crazy experiences with. I’m the one that keeps her on track. We are soooo proud of her too but we miss her and hate that she is in North Carolina…too far to make a quick trip for lunch or dinner as we did with our oldest at FSU. It is harder this time because I can’t get my “fix” of seeing her when I need it. Not as easily anyway.
You know you will be fine but this is the toughest of days for you and Fran. And you know what else? This is tough on Lauren too. Excited to be entering this phase, she is moving away from her comfort zone and it will take some adjusting. When she comes home to visit, she will be so happy the first couple of days. But you will soon see that she is even more anxious to go back home (that hurts…college becomes her home) to her independent life. She will work hard for herself but she knows she is working hard to make you and Fran proud. You have raised a really great girl. Aren’t we listeners silly to think we know you so well?
I wish you, Fran and Lauren the best. By the end of this semester you will have adjusted. Cry and let her know you cry for her. It only cements you into her heart that much more! I guarantee…you are the most important people in the world to her.

Hi Scott, Love your morning show! I am also from Columbus, Oh. One morning I heard you talking about Johnny Marzetti and I knew what you were talking about. I recently found the actual recipe from a Lazarus cookbook from my Grandmother. Here you go..Enjoy!
Johnny Marzetti from Lazarus
1 lb ground beef, 1/2 cup diced onion, 1 1/2 cup diced celery, 1 lb. elbow noodles, 1 qt canned tomatoes, 1 tbsp soy sauce,
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper to taste. Cook noodles until tender. Saute Beef, add onions and celery, cook until tender. Add cooked noodles, tomatoes, salt, pepper, soy and worcestershire sauce. Put in shallow pan and bake 20-30 min. at 350 degrees. My grandmother always added velveeta cheese, I use cheddar.

I know this is a weird question but, can you tell me the name of the song from the morning show that you use before you read the “complaints” people have. Like today(7/21) you played the song before you read that very rude article about that guy wanting to retire at age 45 on his parents money… How rude was he?
Thanks,

Hey Scott.
Love your show. I moved to Orlando 4 years ago and since then I’ve been hooked with your show. Coming to work I start listening and just want to say that I love the “mix” Mel is putting to the show. I am guessing she is covering for Dana. Once again love the way she is interacting.
Have a Mix Day.

You were right, the Father’s day remix for Butterfly kisses brought tears to my eyes! Is there anyway you all will put that on your website so we can e-mail/dedicate it to our fathers? (Past years for graduation would be great, but if that’s not possible one year would still be fantastic.)

Hi Scott:
I was listening on Friday when you were talking about not liking coffee. My husband is not a coffee drinker, but he likes flavored creamers and after dinner he prefers his coffee with, Baily’s Irish Cream in lieu of creamer, or Sambuca, or Kahula Too keep the calories down I like to just add vanilla extract to my cup of coffee with some creamer. Mix it up and see what you like best.
I also have a pair of Sketcher Shae ups and I do not like them because they look like orthopedic shoes. I also have a pair of Avia shapers and I love them! I can wear them to the gym and they look like regular cross training shoes.I do not wear them around the house — only to work out.

I was listening this morning and I love the fact that you at least tried coffee and that you might even like it! Good Job!
It is indeed a coffee world and I am a coffee girl. Also, I was just getting out of my car when the whole toning shoe conversation started, so I just wanted to say that I do own a pair of the Sketcher Shape Ups. I’m an xray tech and on my feet ALOT. I don’t think they are toning anything! BUT, they have in fact help alleviate my lower back pain. I reccommend them to people all the time. LOVE EM’ But yea, not really for guys!
Have a great weekend!

I love your show and listen every morning on my way to school. I’m a Brevard teacher and just have to comment about your discussion this morning about real-life math and the dimensions of the tables for your party. I loved the connection of relating math to life and finally finding an example of how we use math. I tell my students (6th graders) that every day. However, got to give you a bit of a hard time and ask you a question. Are you sure the circumference was 60 inches? That would be a pretty small table. Think about it, approximately 20″ diameter isn’t very big…I’m thinking the diameter is probably 60″ which would be a nice large table that would sit about 6-8 people. Hum….

Scott,
Let me start by saying that I love your show. I have listened to it for many, many years.
Considering your curse for interviewing people and their losing whatever it is they are doing- Dancing With the Stars, etc., why would you interview someone from the Magic???? We want Magic to win!!! If the Magic lose we will have to hold you accountable :0)
Thanks and have a wonderful day,
