Why Is Talib Kweli Permanently Suspended From Twitter?

The rapper faces a dispute and heavy allegations

August 5, 2020

Representatives from Twitter have permanently suspended Talib Kweli after a new report from news publication Jezebel alleges the rapper mercilessly harassed a 24-year-old activist on the social platform.

Jezebel says Twitter alerted them to Talib’s suspension after “repeated violations of the Twitter rules … Violence, harassment and other similar types of behavior discourage people from expressing themselves.” The account has been suspended since late July.

At the center of these allegations is self-proclaimed activist, Maya Moody. She and Kweli first interacted on Twitter in early July, after Moody tweeted about Black rappers marrying light-skinned women.

She says Kweli responded with numerous aggressive tweets, threatening to continue the harassment unless she apologized or deleted her account. Kweli then moved his virtual harangue to Instagram, sharing Moody’s posts and information in an hour-long Live video.

Two days later, the rapper said he was leaving Twitter for “the greener pastures of Patreon.” Kweli responded to the initial Jezebel report saying, “I’ve never cyber harassed anyone in my life. I responded, on Twitter, to the lies that Maya posted about me. When you respond to someone who posts lies about you, that is not harassment.”

Patreon is a subscription based web service allowing creators to monetize their talents in a fast manner.
