Legendary Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz was shot yesterday in his home country, the Dominican Republic.  There are a lot of conflicting reports, but here's what we know so far:

According to ESPN, "Big Papi" was hanging out at a club in Santo Domingo last night when he was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot him at a very close distance in the back.

The bullet hit him in the abdomen and he was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery.

David's father, Leo, told local reporters he's currently resting and is expected to make a full recovery. He said he's out of surgery and stable and said, "Big Papi will be around for a long time!"

At least one person allegedly responsible for the shooting has already been arrested.  The police haven't released a motive, but one officer denied earlier reports that it was an attempted robbery.

The police say the gunman was caught and attacked by a crowd of people at the bar.  Police are waiting for the man to receive medical treatment before questioning him.

It's also not 100% clear that David was the target, even though he was shot at such close range. Two other people were injured, but it sounds like they'll be okay as well.
